Amazon pledges to keep user data private as Eero deal completes

Amazon pledges to maintain user privacy as Eero deal completes

‘We won’t change a word of the privacy policy… honest…’

TECH GIANT Amazon has completed its purchase of mesh router outfit Eero and has pledged that it’ll keep user data private.

Amazon first announced plans to buy Eero, one of the first major players in the now-oversubscribed mesh router space, back in February. Since, users of Eero’s WiFi kit have voiced privacy concerns about the takeover, hardly surprising given recent reports which claimed Amazon is asking gadget makers to provide them with a “continuous stream” of data from their devices

Both firms have taken steps to appease these fears. Dave Limp, Amazon’s SVP of devices and services, told The Verge that it’s “not “changing a word” of Eero’s privacy policy.

Similarly, Eero CEO Nick Weaver has published a blog post to coincide with Tuesday’s announcement, in which he promises the firm will maintain its “deep commitment to security and privacy”.

“We want to reaffirm our commitment to your privacy head-on. At Eero, we have always believed everyone has a fundamental right to privacy, especially in their own homes, and we take this extremely seriously,” Weaver says. “Amazon shares our philosophy to put customer trust first, and with every new product and feature we build, we’ll continue to adhere to our guiding principles.”

These principles, Weaver explains, includes being clear on what data it’s collecting, collecting network diagnostic information “only to improve the performance and reliability” of Eero products, and actively working to minimise the amount of data to which the firm has access.

With no access to user data on offer, it seems Amazon might actually have purchased Eero in a bid to bolster its somewhat-lacking smart home ambitions. To celebrate, Amazon is now offering the Eero Home WiFi System for $299 instead of the usual $399, but only to buyers in the US. μ
