Apple Arcade offers premium App Store games for a monthly subscription

Apple is going deeper into exclusive gaming

APPLE HAS REVEALED Arcade, a game subscription service that will bundle games from App Store developers together and offer them in the form of a monthly subscription.

With one billion people having downloaded games from the App Store, Apple has a massive semi-accidental game platform.

“iOS has become the largest gaming platform in the world,” claimed Tim Cook during Apple’s keynote on Monday.

But the problem is that a lot of paid-for high-quality games and titles lovingly developed by indie developers need to compete with free alternatives.

While free apps can rake in cash using microtransactions and advertising, such revenue models don’t suit every game, especially those with an eye for artistic flair. Yet at the same time, a lot of people don’t want to shell out for an App Store game.

To solve that conundrum, Apple Arcade will offer more than 100 exclusive games in a subscription service that works across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV.

There’s no word on how developers will be paid, but rumours have hinted at them being paid based on how much their games are played.

Rather than go the Google Stadia route and offer game streaming, Apple Arcade will enable games to be downloaded onto iDevices and played offline if need be.

Set to launch in the Autumn across some 150 countries, Apple noted pricing and other details will come at a later date. But one thing’s for sure, Apple is building out its gaming influence. µ
