Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1660 is available right now for £199

Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1660 could be a 1080p headache for AMD’s Radeon lineup

A GRIZZLED INQUIRER WRITER RUBS ITS EYES: “So the deluge of rumours were true; a GeForce GTX 1660 has actually been launched.”

Just weeks after the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti made its debut, Nvidia has introduced a smaller sibling into the mix.

On sale today for a starting price of £199, the GTX 1660 comes with 1,408 CUDA cores, 6GB of GDDR5 video memory with a bandwidth of 192GBps, and has a boost clock speed of 1.8GHz; Nvidia noted that clock speed could easily be increased with some overclocking.

All in all, that puts the GTX 1660 a little behind the more expensive GTX 1660 Ti. But at the £200 price mark, it looks to be a good mid-range GPU that will rival the likes of AMD’s Radeon RX 590 and will be a direct replacement for the excellent but now oldish GeForce GTX 1060.

Nvidia touted that the GTX 1660 offers 15 per cent faster performance than the 6GB GTX 1060 at 1080p resolution.

That doesn’t seem like a massive hike, but the GTX 1660 is based on Nvidia’s latest Turing architecture, which Team Green is likely getting more performance out of. So we’d tentatively say there’s probably more performance to be extracted out of the GTX 1660 once more drivers and optimisations are rolled out.

Opting for the GTX flavour of the new Turing GPUs, rather than the higher-end RTX guise, means users will lose out on features like ray-tracing. But then again the impact on their wallets won’t be as significant, and the adoption of ray-tracing in games is still in its infancy.

We’d need to see the GTX 1660 in action and get benchmarks, but all signs point towards it being very much a card to beat in delivering bang-for-the-buck when it comes to gaming performance at 1080p. µ
