Steam now lets you stream anywhere in the world

IF YOU’RE THE kind of Civilization obsessive who that only feels comfortable commanding armies from the same real-world location as your virtual armies, then good news: Steam Link will now let you stream anywhere in the world.

Yes, there’s no need to lug your gaming laptop back and forth through airport security. Steam Link – which previously only allowed you to stream your games around your own home – will now let you bounce your games to anywhere in the world, under the slightly revised name of Steam Link Anywhere. The only requirements are that you have a good upload connection from your gaming computer and a good download connection from the device you want to play on.

For now, said gaming devices are limited to the original discontinued Steam Link plugged into a TV via HDMI, Raspberry Pi and Android devices. Nothing on iOS yet, as Apple continues to drag its feet on the approval process.

One weird absence from that list is PC to PC support, which feels like an odd omission given you can bounce games that way in your own home. And obviously playing PC games on a PC is the most natural way to play – even if playing them thousands of miles away isn’t hugely natural. Actually, given we’re talking about animated pixels being accurately produced from the electrification of rare earth metals dug out of the Earth, perhaps we shouldn’t be so precious about what constitutes “natural” here.

Right now Steam Link Anywhere is in early beta, but you can try it out by downloading the 688 beta build. You never need to worry about being productive when traveling again. µ
