Google Introduces Super Cheap Nearline Storage for Storing “Infinite” Data

What is Google Cloud Storage Nearline?

Google has announced a new way to store massive amounts of data for those who have very large data requirements. This is being called as Google Cloud Storage Nearline which is a cloud-based storage technique to store large data of the order of hundreds of terabytes.

The Google Cloud Storage Nearline service in right now in beta and charges just one cent per GB per month for data.

With the Google Cloud Storage Nearline, Google aims at challenging the orthodox notions of corporate that offline storage is best for a service provider. Google is doing this by providing the flexibility of cloud storage coupled with the cheaper cost of online storage.

What are its advantages?

This is useful for the companies who have large data requirements which isn’t important enough to keep close but too important to delete. So, it is a long-lived data but infrequently accessed. This storage has the same availability and durability, but a cost lower as compared to the standard charges. It a low-cost storage class available in Google Cloud Storage.

Google Nearline is faster than the traditional “cold” stored data and offline stored data and it could be accessed within seconds. But, the amount of data accessed is just one per cent per gigabyte per month, plus the retrieval costs. Calculating the cost, it is cheaper than other available services like Dropbox or Google Drive’s paid plan who handle comparatively smaller amount of data. Google Cloud Storage Nearline is similar to Amazon’s similar service.

Google will probably make use of off-site backup creation of critical information. For Nearline, Google is partnering with a bit more old-styled storage companies like Iron Mountain, Veritas, Geminare and NetApp.

Avtandil Garakanidze, Product Manager at Google says:

With Google Cloud Storage Nearline, you can now benefit from a very low-cost, highly-durable storage that can be used to store limitless amounts of data and have access to that data at any time. Our primary focus is to help you bring new use cases to life, and this is why we’ve worked with some of the leading backup and storage providers and are focused on growing this ecosystem. We look forward to seeing the great, innovative ways you’ll use this distinctive new storage option.

The new partnerships and super-competitive prices will help Google to reach new customers and pose a threat to Amazon’s Glacier storage solution.
