A fond farewell to Google Code

Google’s official project hosting service, is in fact shutting down. If you have any projects on Google Code, now might be the time to start the migration over to a code repository like Github.

Originally launched in 2006, and has lasted for almost a decade, Google Code has been operating in the shadow of GitHub. Today the search giant officially announced that all new project creation has been disabled.

If you have projects on Google Code you will have until August of this year 2015, before the site will become read-only.Google Code projects still remaining will no longer be able to be updated, however you will still be able to read and view source code, issues and wikis.

On January 25, 2016 the Google Code service will be totally shut down.

However you will be able to download tarballs of projects which will be available through the end of 2016.

As a courtesy to users of Google Code and to help get current projects off the Google Code site, Google has an Export to Github tool to make the migration easy.
